Carpenter Ant Treatment

Carpenter ants show up in Upper Marlboro because so much of the housing stock sits against woods. Homes backing the Patuxent River Park corridor and the Jug Bay area, the wooded rear lots in Marlboro Ridge, Oak Creek and Beechtree, and the mature oak canopy near Rosaryville State Park all put dead limbs, stumps and leaf-packed grade within a few feet of siding. The parent colony often lives outdoors in a stump or a dying tree; satellite colonies then move indoors into a wall void, a hollow porch column, or the band joist above a damp basement wall. That split is why a perimeter spray alone tends to quiet things for two weeks and then fail — the outdoor colony keeps sending workers.

What we look for is physical and countable. Carpenter ants push their excavated wood out of the nest as frass — coarse shavings that look like pencil sharpener leavings, often mixed with insect body parts. Find a cone of that under a window sill in Marlboro Meadows or below a deck ledger in Perrywood and the nest is usually within a foot or two. Moisture is the other tell: leaking gutter seams, a downspout dumping at the foundation, a shower wall on an exterior corner, or the sunny-side deck posts in Balmoral where the footing stays wet. We tap and probe suspect wood, listen for hollow sound, and check the trails at dusk when workers are most active.

This service fits you when the ants are large (roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch), mostly black or black-and-red, active in the evening, and you are seeing frass or winged swarmers indoors. It is the wrong service if you are seeing mud tubes on a basement wall or paper-thin blistered trim — that is a subterranean termite question and gets a different inspection and a different treatment. Small ants trailing in a straight line to a pet bowl are usually odorous house or pavement ants, handled under general ant service at a lower cost. The trade-off with carpenter ant work is that it is diagnostic and slower up front: we spend time locating the nest and may drill small, patchable holes to inject a void, instead of ringing the house and leaving. That is the part that actually ends the colony.

Older frame homes near the Prince George's County Courthouse on Main Street and in the Old Marlboro Historic District need a lighter hand — we favor void injection and baiting over broad application where original trim and plaster are involved. Wooded properties in Croom, out toward Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, and in Melwood almost always need the exterior half taken seriously: stumps ground or treated, firewood moved off the foundation, limbs cut back from the roofline, and grade cleared so siding is not in contact with soil.
